The French Baker - 2009 Most Outstanding Filipino Retailer -

Alegria S. Limjoco, and PRA Vice-President for External Affairs and Chairman of JVS Worldwide, Inc. Vicente N. Muñoz.

In the recent round of honors bestowed by the Philippine Retailers Association, Johnlu G. Koa, the Founder and CEO of The French Baker, has received the Outstanding Filipino Retailers 2009 Award in the Medium-Food Category.

“I am much honored that The French Baker has been recognized as a world-class retailer. This is both an inspiration and a challenge for us to continue leading the pack with new product ideas and innovative baking concepts and to contribute to the advancement of the baking and bread-making industries in our country,” Koa said as he received the award.

The French Baker: the name conjures up visions of a friendly boulanger (the French word for “baker”), hard at work at his oven, where he works all day baking fresh French bread and fine pastries too. Where once such hearty good eats such as baguettes and ethereal baked goods such as croissants were a rarity in local stores, now Filipinos can get their fix of good, chewy, home-style pain (the French word for “bread”) at any one of The French Baker’s 39 branches, which are located all over the Philippines.

It takes a lot of hard work to become a bread-maker. Baking requires exact quantities and adherence to temperatures and humidities – and, of course, a very good working knowledge of ovens. Throughout his bread empire Koa has shown a deep understanding of all of these concepts and ingredients, and applies them so well that he has made a point of putting in place procedures and timetables to ensure that every customer who buys their daily bread at The French Baker gets nothing but freshly-made goodness. So much so that certain of his company’s branches have to keep baking bread all day long just to keep up with the demand.

While the company’s best-sellers include rich breads and pastries such as Danishes and meaty turnovers, The French Bread is also keeping an eagle eye on its customers’ health and well-being. The retailer’s idea of “good food that’s good for you” reaches new heights in its products, the delicious, nutrient-enhanced pan de sal, as well as the company’s latest offering, the GI-friendly 100% Whole Grain Bread. Both are good and delicious breads on their own, but the added power-packed punches of additional health benefits really take the breads to the next level, making them much sought-after by consumers.

SM MegamallOne of The French Baker’s most popular branches is the one at the newly-redesigned Atrium of SM Megamall. The photograph shows the extensive remodeling now being conducted throughout the rest of its branches, transforming them into venues reminiscent of the classic Parisian brasserie.

Other than continuing to offer the breads of the world at its branches, The French Baker has been noted for offering good, freshly-made meals to consumers, with several locations becoming busy restaurants in their own right. At present, the branches are undergoing renovation in order to follow Koa’s localization of the iconic French restaurant called the brasserie – and with each new and remodeled venue, the combination of good bread, great food, and warm, comfortable interiors brings new meaning to The French Baker experience. These branches are now labeled as The French Baker’s New Concept Stores, and they are located at SM North EDSA, SM Annex, SM Megamall, Landmark Bridgeway, SM Mall of Asia, SM Clark, SM Santa Mesa, Landmark TriNoma, SM Taytay, Robinsons Otis, SM Marikina, SM Cubao, and SM Cebu.

The new brasserie-style décor of The French Baker’s new outlet at the Robinson’s Ermita Supermarket sets off its wide variety of freshly-made breads and entices customers to stop in for a loaf or two while shopping.

An oasis of European taste and design in the heart of Adriatico, the newest branch of The French Baker beckons to all with the breads of the world. Since opening in June, The French Baker in Ermita has become one of the busiest outlets in the entire country. A wide and varied clientele, made up of students, locals, and expats alike, eagerly patronizes the store, buying up the breads so quickly that in order to meet the demand the staff must continue baking throughout the working day.

The newest outlet of The French Baker, located at the Robinson’s Ermita Supermarket near the Adriatico entrance, boasts an appetizing display of its famous fresh breads, and is easily accessible to shoppers.

Customers at this branch can freely indulge in their French Baker favorites: freshly-made breads such as Danish pastries, croissants, and baguettes; healthy choices such as the 100% Whole Grain Bread; and fruit juices and the award-winning Tchibo coffees.

Currently set up as a walk-in and self-service outlet for express bread purchases, the Ermita branch still has many of its habitués clamoring for chairs and tables where they can enjoy the bakery chain’s famous restaurant specialties.
